Thanks for the Mac memories |
Thanks for the Mac memories
For fans of Macintosh computers, Tuesday brought a chance to hear some of the inside stories behind the history of the iconic machines.
At Macworld in San Francisco, Andy Hertzfeld, a member of the team that built the original Mac, spoke to a crowd of about 50 people about the early days of the project.
Hertzfeld was on hand to promote his book, Revolution in the Valley: The insanely great story of how the Mac was made, at publisher O'Reilly's booth.
The book first came out in 2004, but that didn't keep a standing-room-only crowd from gathering to hear Hertzfeld tell the tales behind the famous project.
Looking a little bit stouter than he did in 1984, he began his talk by paying his respects to fellow Mac pioneer Jef Raskin, who died in February 2005.
"I'll begin with a tribute to Jef and tell you how Jef hated my book," Hertzfeld began. "The hardest part of all (was that) he really objected to a few of" the book's stories.
He recalled that Raskin had not been particularly pleased by an anecdote in the book about how fellow Mac team member Burrell Smith, whom Hertzfeld said had a talent for imitations, used to mimic Raskin.
"'Why, I, I, I, I invented the Macintosh,'" Hertzfeld said, quoting Smith imitating Raskin.
He also said Smith would then mimic a reporter responding to Raskin: "'Why, no, I thought Burrell invented the Macintosh.'"
And Smith would end the joke with one final Raskin imitation: "'Why, I, I, I, I invented Burrell.'"
Clearly fond of Raskin, Hertzfeld nevertheless poked a little bit of fun at him during his talk. Hertzfeld remembered his first week at Apple Computer and how Raskin sat next to him at one point and introduced himself.
"'I'm not only a mathematical genius, but a musical genius, as well,'" Hertzfeld said Raskin told him by way of greeting. "I thought, 'What do I say to that?' So I said, 'Good for you.'"
Hertzfeld also said Raskin had been critical of Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs' "unique management style." So Raskin put together a written critique of Jobs' perceived managerial shortcomings and sent them to Apple investor Mike Markkula. But Jobs found out about the memo. |

iPhone prepares for new life as a PC
News analysis Starting from February, you'll finally be able to call the iPhone a mobile computer.
Ever since Apple let the iPhone loose in late June, most of the criticism around the device has centered on the company's decision to shut developers out of the iPhone. CEO Steve Jobs tried to assuage developers by reminding them that they could create Web applications for the iPhone.
However, the PC and the Mac would have never changed lives to the extent they have unless Microsoft and Apple allowed third-party application developers to create the myriad programs that simply couldn't be envisioned or tackled by those two companies. It's just not possible for one organisation to envision everything that you or I might like to do with our computers.
In an inevitable move, Jobs revealed the plan for third-party iPhone applications on Wednesday. Come February, budding iPhone developers will be able to obtain a software development kit that will give them the tools and the know-how to create safe and reliable applications for the iPhone without having to depend on "jailbreak" programs. That means iPhone users will be able to add applications they can trust without voiding their warranties.
The only thing unexpected about this development is the timing. Some thought an SDK would arrive as early as this month, while others didn't expect Apple to provide an opening into the iPhone until next year's Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
The reason it's taking so long, according to Apple, was that the company wanted to find a way to be as "open" as possible to third-party development while still keeping a lid on viruses and malware that could kill the iPhone before it gets off the ground.
The iPhone runs OS X, which is essentially a derivative of Mac OS X with all the parts you don't need on a phone stripped out to make the software smaller and easier on your battery. There are tested and proven Unix fundamentals at the core of OS X, but Apple apparently felt it couldn't guarantee a reliable experience on the iPhone until it made sure that no security holes had been created in the development of the mobile operating system. |

Buying a Gaming Computer
IF you're thinking about getting your hands on a PC than does more than manage Microsoft Word documents and the occasional spreadsheet, this guide is for you. Here we look at how to build or buy a gaming computer that will deliver hours of fun, while still being capable of all of the boring work stuff.
A good gaming PC will cost more than a simple machine for work, but there is an upside. You'll be able to work and play with the one machine and the latest games are truly mind-boggling. The visual marvels of current hi-tech titles like World In Conflict, Bioshock and Neverwinter Nights 2 would have been unthinkable just five years ago. Even though it's expensive to keep your PC at the forefront of technology, the pay-off is one hell of a ride. PCs can be cool
PC games deliver more varied and challenging experiences than any other form of electronic entertainment. The interface of a PC – a keyboard and mouse, rather than a simple joypad – really opens up the game world and gives you the ability to interact with the environment in countless ways. Consoles might be delivering more titles, but some of the best games only really work on a computer.
When it comes to online and multiplayer games, those on the PC are always going to be light-years ahead of those on a console – look at the success of the massively multiplayer game World Of Warcraft, which has taken the world by storm and almost become a way of life for some players. PC games also have more complex designs and deliver a more cerebral challenge that can help you learn skills that are useful in other spheres of life (assuming you stop playing for long enough!). The fact that your favourite toy also lets you do some online shopping and hammer out work documents is just a bonus. Power to play?
At the moment, Windows Vista is starting to impact both home users and game developers. Vista features new game-based tools, with the Direct X10 code being the most significant. With this in mind, it makes sense to make sure your gaming computer will support Vista and include as many bells and whistles as possible.
Ensure that your games machine will handle Windows Vista as a minimum. For this you’ll need two gigabytes (2Gb) of memory (RAM). A decent graphics card with 512Mb of memory and a larger-than-average monitor wouldn't go astray either. A DVD drive is essential and a hard drive of 200Gb or more will provide plenty of storage space. If some speakers or headphones are thrown in, that's even better. At the moment you can find a computer that will suit these needs for under $2000.
When looking at machines, make sure you are comfortable with the technology if you are not getting the computer assembled for you. You can save a lot of money selecting parts yourself, but unless you can assemble your own PC and install all of the software, a package from a reputable dealer will be a much better option.
A good rule of thumb when buying a PC is to look for a something that manages your needs. Having found that, indulge in a little future-proofing and buy a machine that is just a little bit more powerful in terms of core elements like the central processing unit (CPU) and graphics card. |
